Casual Vacancy - Southwick Parish
I refer to your notification of a vacancy and enclose a copy of the Notice of Vacancy.
Please can you arrange for this Notice to be published in the parish of Southwick on the publication date.
You may also publish the notice on your Parish Council website if you wish. A copy will also be published on
the Wiltshire Council website at http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/elections-councillor-vacancies.
An election to fill the vacancy will be held if TEN electors from the Parish of Southwick write to the Returning
Officer by 18 September, 2020 asking for an election to be held.
If an election is not requested by that date, then the Parish Council must fill the vacancy by co-option as
soon as practicable.
I will write to you again after 18 September, 2020 to let you know whether there will be an election, or
whether the Parish Council may co-opt to fill the vacancy.
Where ten valid requests for a by-election are received by the Returning Officer then under the provisions of
the Coronavirus Act 2020 and The Local Government and Police and Crime Commissioner
(Coronavirus)(Postponement of Elections and Referendums)(England and Wales) Regulations 2020 the byelection
will not currently take place and the vacancy will remain unfilled. The 2020 regulations provide for
the by election to take place on the date for the Ordinary Election of Councillors due to be held on Thursday
6 May 2021. However, this date may be brought forward or deferred by the Government depending upon the
circumstances. Any election that is in due course called will be duly publicised as required by law.
